Resolving R&D issues with DX (Digital Transformation) Solutions
Hitachi High-Tech introduces a method called Materials Informatics (MI) and Chemicals Informatics (CI), which makes full use of AI to help the customers to be able to increase the efficiency of finding the best compound candidate and its optimum mixing ratios. Materials Informatics is a technology that utilizes computational science, statistics, and other methods to analyse experimental data provided by the customer. It covers forward and reverse analysis, descriptor, image analysis, text mining, and idea generation. Meanwhile, Chemical Informatics is an compound discovery AI, a unique technology to search potential compounds based on public literatures. By using these solutions, the manufacturer has been able to reduce the time of development and cost, which also leads to a reduction in CO2 emissions and waste.

This presentation explores a real-world use case comparing various hardware architectures, including CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, and ASICs, in the context of graph analytics, focusing on performance, cost-efficiency, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) considerations. The analysis challenges the dominance of GPUs in AI and big-data workloads, demonstrating that alternative hardware, such as CPUs, FPGAs, and ASICs, can provide competitive or superior results in certain graph computing tasks. Key highlights include:
Performance: CPUs, FPGAs, and ASICs are shown to deliver exceptional performance in graph algorithms, with CPUs achieving up to 13x the speed of GPU-accelerated architectures for ultra-deep traversal tasks. FPGAs and ASICs further contribute to optimized, specialized processing.
Cost: The study emphasizes the significant cost savings that can be realized through CPU, FPGA, and ASIC-based architectures, reducing overall hardware costs by 35-70%. These alternatives offer more economically viable solutions for enterprises seeking to build large-scale, high-performance data centers.
Sustainability (ESG): With energy consumption reductions ranging from 50% to 75%, CPUs, FPGAs, and ASICs present a more sustainable choice compared to power-hungry GPUs, helping organizations meet their ESG targets while maintaining top-tier performance.
The case study highlights how leveraging different hardware architectures, including CPUs, FPGAs, and ASICs, can achieve better ROI and sustainability while addressing the escalating demands for AI-driven graph analytics and big-data processing.
